The story of TRAX
What is TRAX?
TRAX from PRX features a mix of curated podcasts for 9–13-year-olds. Our mission is to stimulate, entertain, empower and educate our listeners with shows that are enjoyed by tweens and trusted by parents.
When did TRAX launch?
TRAX launched in May 2020.
What age range is appropriate for listening to TRAX Podcasts?
TRAX is designed for 9–13-year-olds. While TRAX shows are created with them in mind, many of our shows can be enjoyed by the whole family. If you’re not sure if everyone in your family is ready for a specific show based on the description, we recommend screening an episode ahead of time.
Why create a podcast network for tweens?
Most podcasts are weighted toward an adult audience. The middle school ages of 9–13 are often overlooked and underserved in audio. Our shows provide what they’re looking for: real, relatable, relevant programming, created just for them. Listening to podcasts is a screen-free activity that allows for engagement while doing other activities like drawing, building, or exercising.
The Kids Listen Survey, the first-ever study of children’s podcast listening habits, reveals 70% of respondents (parents or caregivers who currently listen to podcasts) said they sought out podcasts for kids as an engaging alternative to screen time. This survey found that kids are deep and thoughtful listeners, often more so than adults. Kids are likely to quote or re-enact part of a podcast episode, tell others what they’ve learned, ask to listen again, get more information or request to do an activity inspired by the podcast. Listening is also a practice that extends into other parts of our lives — listening to the voices and experiences of others builds empathy and prompts reflection and inquiry.
